Single Ply Roofs
Single Ply Roof Systems are another option for low sloped (flat) roofs. Single Ply Systems usually consist of thermoplastic or rubberized materials that are installed in a single layer. They can be installed using mechanical fasteners (screws and plates), adhesive, or loosely applied with heavy ballast installed over the top.
There are three main types of Single Ply Roofs:
- PVC (polyvinyl chloride)
PVC Systems consist of thermoplastic materials that usually include an encased reinforcing fabric. The overlap seams are heat welded together on the roof.
- TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin)
TPO Systems consist of thermoplastic materials that usually include an encased reinforcing fabric. The overlap seams are heat welded together on the roof.
- EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer)
EPDM is a rubber-like sheet that can come with or without a reinforcing fabric. The overlap seams of EPDM are usually sealed with an adhesive.
The advantage of Single Ply Roof Systems is that they can be installed in a relatively clean and quiet fashion with minor inconvenience to the tenant or building owner. They can be installed without the use of hot asphalt, eliminating complaints about asphalt odor.
